Spectroscopic Study of the Interaction of Reactive Dyes with Polymeric Cationic Modifiers of Cotton Fabrics

Cotton cationization with low molecular weight or polymeric cationic modifiers allows the effective dyeing of cotton substrates reactive dyes under salt-free and more environmentally friendly conditions. The current work focuses on spectroscopic study intermolecular interactions, which dictate physicochemical process associated fabric dyeing. Water-soluble copolymers vinyl benzyl chloride (VBC) triethylammonium (VBCTEAM) have been used as cellulose modifiers. Dye uptake was assessed using Remazol Brilliant Blue R Novacron Ruby S-3B dyes. involves ATR-FTIR, UV-Vis, fluorescence, XPS spectroscopy. results binary polymer-rich dye-polymer aqueous solutions precipitates at stoichiometric charge-ratio revealed that sulfonate/sulfate anions interact VBCTEAM units polymer via electrostatic interactions. Moreover, comparative dye application modified unmodified fabrics suggests that, unlike latter, where are chemically bound to cellulose, forces dominate interaction molecules.
